    Skagen, or to seafarers the Skaw, the world’s largest sand split stretches out to mark the point where the North Sea meets the Baltic, where the salt-laden Skagerrak impressively joins the brackish Kattegat. Denmark’s most northern town is where piloting can begin or end. The sheltered eastern coast offers safe anchorage and is an ideal pit stop for vessels

    Skagen 1: Position: 57˚47.5N – 010˚46.0

    Ever growing, the Skaw has long been a perilous place for shipping, particularly in the days of sail. The sand split is 30 kms long and ever moving towards Sweden with an estimated 80,000 truck and trailer loads of sand deposited by the North Sea every year.

  • Sjællands Reef

    Sjaellands Rev Nord: Position/Area: 56˚03.5N – 011˚06.0E

    The embarkation point at the reef is one of the busiest on Route Tango. Sjællands Odde is one of several finger peninsulas that stretch out into the Great Belt. They are geological telltale signs of how tricky the waterways are and why the actual channel is so narrow in places because of reefs.

    Sjaellands Rev Nord: Position/Area: 56˚03.5N – 011˚06.0E

    The section between Sjælland’s Reef and Spodsbjerg is the most deceptive of the entire route with the hidden channel that twists and turns. Either side of it is shallow water which adds to the complexity of navigating because it is subject to change by wind and currents. It is also the most spectacular with the Great Belt Bridge.

  • Great Belt South

    Great Belt South (Route Tango) DW buoy 56: Position: 54˚44.0N – 010˚47.0E

    Spodsbjerg is an old fishing port where today the busiest craft are two ferries and the pilot boats that connect to the vessels using Route Tango. The ferries are a vital link in the Danish transportation system moving people, cars and goods vehicles from Langeland to Lolland.

  • Great Belt South

    Great Belt South (Route Tango) DW buoy 56: Position: 54˚44.0N – 010˚47.0E

    The Danish Pilot Service’s headquarters are situated in the old railway station, the most at the end of the line on a short-lived transportation experiment. The building is a fitting location for planning embarkations.

  • Gedser

    Gedser DW 74 buoy: Position: 54,37N 012.16E

    Scandinavia’s most southerly point and at the eastern gate to the Danish Straits, all three of them. It also feeds traffic to and from the Keil Canal. Currently the Fehmarn Belt, the stretch of water that separates Germany from Denmark, is a very busy place and it’s about to get busier.

  • Gedser

    Gedser DW 74 buoy: Position: 54,37N 012.16E

    The tunnel that will connect the two countries by 2029 is the biggest construction of its type with 90 huge sections of concrete tunnelway being floated out and slotted into a 45-meter-deep trench. These are concrete bergs and at 210m long by 42m wide and nearly 10 m high, bigger than many of the ships using the belt.

Embarkation Ports

Traveling north to south or from the Baltic towards the Atlantic, we have four operational ports. We’re headquartered at Spodsbjerg (3) on the island of Langeland, from where we service the entrance to the Great Belt South. Pilotage time between each of the points under normal circumstance is about eight hours.
